Interesting question...

I've always kinda liked them if they are small or subtle... the high and extreme ones to me are a terrible waste of beautiful hair.

I know a lady with really thick hair just below her shoulders... she is constantly complaining about the weight of her hair.

So with her last trim, she got an undercut... maybe 3 inches...and when her hair is down you can't even tell.

But pull it in a ponytail and it's really obvious... and like you, the contrast is what turned me on... heavily.

If done for fun, when it starts to grow back, I would probably lose interest (in at least the contrast, not the length overall).
